This woman desired body contouring via liposuction. She eats healthy and leads a healthy life. Despite such measures, she felt that certain body parts were resistant to fat loss. She is near her ideal body weight. Her main areas of concern were that of the abdomen, flanks, lower back, and outer thighs. This patient is an excellent candidate for liposuction surgery as she has localized areas of fat deposition and is a healthy individual. During the consultation, she learned that the final outcome from liposuction surgery involves two components: 1) fat aspirated and 2) skin retraction. Therefore, it was extensively discussed for each area of concern, the anticipated amount of fat to be removed and the quality of the overlying skin (i.e. – how will the skin do after surgery). After all, if the skin quality is poor, then less than adequate skin retraction is anticipated leading to a compromised result. This patient underwent an uneventful liposuction with aspiration of approximately 3.5 liters of fat. Her postoperative recovery was uneventful as well, requiring approximately one week of pain medication. I have patients wear approximately six weeks of compressive garment to promote skin contraction. The "after" photos were taken three months after liposuction surgery. She demonstrated excellent volume reduction and skin retraction which is expected to continue up to a year. She was very pleased with her outcome and felt even more motivated to pursue healthier life style.
