What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, involves the removal of breast tissue and skin in order to re-contour the breasts and create a smaller, more pleasing shape. In most cases, large areolas - the darker pigmented skin around the nipples - are reduced during this procedure as well. The result is not only a more balanced, proportional appearance, but also alleviation of symptoms such as:

The Procedure

Breast reduction is similar to breast lift surgery, except that it removes a larger volume of breast tissue and fat, in addition to skin. Dr. Chung's goal with this surgery is to not only reduce the volume of the breasts, but to sculpt the remaining tissue into a natural, beautiful shape. Typically Dr. Chung will utilize one of the following methods:

• The lollipop incision encircles the areola at its border, then descends in a straight line, forming the shape of a lollipop. The nipple remains attached to nerves and a blood supply so that it is kept viable and functional after surgery. Through the incisions, excess skin, fat, and breast tissue are removed, and the remaining tissue is contoured to create a smaller, more shapely breast.
• The anchor incision is the most frequently used incision for breast reduction surgery. It expands on the lollipop incision by adding a crescent shaped incision at the base of the breast, forming the shape of an anchor. This allows for a greater degree of reduction in patients with overly large breasts, and a more complete re-shaping of the breasts.
