Body Contouring after Weight Loss

Thanks to advances in medical technology, more people than ever are undergoing massive weight loss to improve their health and lifestyle. Bariatric procedures are among the many options available for those who want to lose a significant amount of weight in a safe and medically supervised manner. However, weight loss success stories often come with the negative side effect of excess skin which hangs from the arms, thighs, breasts and body. This sagging skin can keep you from fully enjoying your new shape and lifestyle by causing physical and emotional discomfort.

Your Post Weight Loss Options

In general, body contouring after weight loss involves the removal of excess skin and fat, and the repositioning and tightening of underlying tissues. Some procedures may be performed with the patient under local anesthesia with sedation, while others may require general anesthesia.

Arm Lift

Also called brachioplasty, arm lift surgery removes excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow, sometimes referred to as "bat wings." Typically, incisions are made along the inside of the arm, starting at the armpit, and will vary in length depending on the amount of skin and tissue to be removed. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat and create a pleasing and proportional shape to the upper arm. Once the underlying tissue is re-shaped and secured, the skin is repositioned over the newly sculpted contours of the arms and sutured.

Thigh Lift

Thigh lift surgery can reshape the inner thighs, outer thighs, or both by removing sagging skin and fat left over after significant weight loss. Approaches will vary, depending on the area to be treated, but typically involve an incision placed in the groin with or without an extension along the inner thigh extending towards the knee. Through this incision, excess skin is removed, and underlying tissue is repositioned and secured. Liposuction may be used to eliminate or reshape residual fat and create a smoother, more pleasing contour to the thighs.

Body Lift

The lower body lift procedure treats the abdomen, waist, buttocks, hips and thighs in one procedure. A circumferential incision around the body removes a band of excess skin and fat and repositions and tightens underlying tissues. Often, liposuction will be used to remove residual fat deposits and create a pleasing contour to the lower body. Incision patterns for this procedure will vary from patient to patient, but are carefully placed to be easily concealed beneath a swimsuit or undergarments whenever possible.
